Dr Jenny Bangham serves as a Lecturer in the History of Medicine within the Science, Technology and Innovation Studies department at the University of Edinburgh. Her research employs historical methodologies to analyze the politics, administration, emotions, and authority dynamics within biomedical sciences, with particular focus on clinical genetics and blood transfusion history.
Her primary research areas encompass Gender Studies, Feminist Science Studies, History of Medicine, History of Science, Race and Decolonial Thought, and Social Studies of Biology and Medicine. She critically examines how gender politics within the NHS, disability rights movements, racial dynamics, and ethical debates have shaped clinical genetics development. Her work consistently investigates marginalized narratives and power structures in biomedical knowledge production.
Bangham's publications reveal a sustained focus on uncovering concealed social dimensions in scientific practice. Her monograph Blood Relations (2020) establishes unexpected connections between blood transfusion systems and human genetics, while the co-edited volume Invisible Labour in Modern Science (2022) analyzes how contributions become anonymized in research. Her scholarship demonstrates recurring themes of labor visibility, identity politics, and institutional power in medical science.
She currently directs a Wellcome Trust-funded project recovering the history of clinical genetics within NHS frameworks and is developing new research on the historical construction of 'rarity' in biomedicine. Bangham's work receives significant external research funding and contributes critical perspectives at the intersection of medical history, gender studies, and science policy.
