Dr. Jenny Alexander is a Senior Lecturer in Politics, Media and Communication at Bournemouth University's School of Humanities and Law. She serves as Programme Leader for BA Politics and BA Politics and Economics. Her research focuses on environmental politics/communication, gender, sexuality, and representation in media. She holds a PhD from the University of Sussex on 19th-century anarchist autobiographies.
Education: PhD in Political Autobiography (University of Sussex, 2004); MA in Critical Theory (University of Sussex, 1995); BA in English Literature (University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1993).
Research Interests: Environmental advertising, eco-feminism, queer subtext in media, and the politics of representation. Current projects include a book on environmental advertising and a study of homoerotic subtext in TV. She has published on fan cultures, eco-celebrity, and eco-fascism.
PhD Supervision: Currently supervising five students examining topics like conspiracy theories in the pandemic, eco-feminist climate fiction, and the cultural history of gin. Previously supervised completed theses on Harry Potter fanfiction in China and working-class girls' media representation.
Grants: Awarded HEIF funding for a DNA Meta-barcoding Ecology centre. Active in teaching courses like Environmentalism and the Politics of Sustainability (Level 5) and Academic Dissertation Supervision.
Labs/Teams: Involved in Bournemouth University's Centre for the Study of Media, Communication and Politics. Conferences include presentations on queer action heroines at Edinburgh and eco-advertising critiques in Sweden.
