Jennifer Tank is the Ludmilla F., Stephen J., and Robert T. Galla Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame and Director of the Notre Dame Environmental Change Initiative (ND-ECI). She leads the Tank Lab, focusing on aquatic ecology and biogeochemistry, particularly nitrogen and carbon cycling in streams impacted by agricultural and urban land use. Her work bridges scientific research with policy outreach to improve freshwater management.
Education:
- Ph.D., Virginia Tech (Biological Sciences)
- Postdoctoral Research: Virginia Tech and Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Research Themes:
- Role of streams in mitigating nutrient pollution (nitrogen/phosphorus)
- Efficacy of agricultural conservation practices like cover crops
- Floodplain restoration via 'two-stage ditch' systems
- Environmental DNA (eDNA) dynamics in flowing waters
- Climate change impacts on Arctic and Midwestern ecosystems
Awards:
- 2013 Leopold Leadership Fellow
- 2020 AAAS Fellow
- SFS Fellow (Society for Freshwater Science)
Labs/Teams: Directs ND-ECI and oversees the Notre Dame Linked Experimental Ecosystem Facility (ND-LEEF), a unique replicated watershed research site. Her Stream Team includes graduate students (e.g., Abagael Pruitt, Emma Thrift) and postdocs (e.g., Moh Aboelnour) studying agricultural biogeochemistry and translational ecology.
