Jennifer Sumner is an Associate Professor in Psychology at UCLA, where she directs the Sumner Stress Lab. Her research examines trauma's biological embedding and consequences for cardiometabolic health, with emphasis on accelerated aging mechanisms.
Education includes a B.A. from Pomona College, Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Northwestern University, and postdoctoral training at Columbia University. Research utilizes longitudinal cohort studies to investigate how PTSD symptoms and stress physiology contribute to cardiovascular/metabolic disease risk across diverse populations including women veterans, postpartum women, and disaster survivors.
Recent publications demonstrate focus on: (1) biological mediators (inflammation, epigenetics) linking trauma to cardiometabolic outcomes; (2) social/environmental determinants of post-traumatic health disparities; and (3) methodological innovations in trauma assessment. Work frequently employs biomarkers and neuroendocrine measures.
