Jennifer Ross is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her research focuses on the biophysics of microtubules and active biological matter, exploring how cells self-organize to perform work through thermal and active processes. She leads the Bio-Active Matter Lab, investigating principles of autonomous cellular organization, particularly in the cytoskeleton and enzyme systems.
Education: B.A. from Wellesley College (2000), Ph.D. from University of California Santa Barbara (2004), followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (2004–2007).
Research Interests emphasize how cells harness noisy, random systems to create ordered structures and functions. Recent work includes studies on microtubule biophysics, enzyme activity as active matter, and undergraduate-driven research projects.
Notable achievements include being named a Fellow of the AAAS and supervising impactful studies published in journals like Physical Review E and European Physical Journal E. Her lab has received grants for student researchers such as Imara Davis (LSAMP, SOURCE Fellowship).
