Jennifer Rose Carr is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), affiliated with the Department of Philosophy within the Humanities & Social Sciences division. She previously held academic positions as Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2015–2016) and as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Leeds (2013–2015). Her educational background includes a Ph.D. in Philosophy from MIT (2013), an M.A. in English and American Literature from Harvard University (2008), and a B.A. in English Literature from Stanford University (2006).
Her primary research focuses on epistemology, decision theory, and philosophy of language. Key themes include epistemic utility theory, belief modeling, normative uncertainty, and the semantics of deontic modals. She explores how beliefs should be structured for maximal accuracy, the implications of normative uncertainty, and the formal analysis of modal language.
Her publications span journals like Mind, Philosophical Studies, and Synthese, addressing topics such as intertheoretic value comparisons, imprecise evidence, and the semantics of 'ought' statements. Her work often bridges formal methods with traditional philosophical inquiry.
Carr actively contributes to academic service, including roles as UCSD’s Placement Officer (2019–present) and organizer of the UCSD Colloquium (2017–2019). She has also been involved in initiatives like the Summer Program for Women in Philosophy and mentoring programs for junior scholars.
