Norbert Gratzl is a Senior Lecturer at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, affiliated with the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCMP) within the Faculty of Philosophy, Science Theory, and Religious Studies. His research focuses on logic, including proof-theory of predicate logic, deontic logic, definite descriptions, argumentation, and the application of Hilbert’s epsilon-calculus to theoretical terms. He holds a Master’s (2000) and PhD (2002) in Philosophy from the University of Salzburg, and was a visiting fellow at the University of California, Irvine’s Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science in 2003. He has also conducted FWF-funded research on deontic logic.
His work explores foundational questions in logic and philosophy, such as structuralist interpretations of scientific theories through Carnap’s logical frameworks. Recent publications emphasize decidability in quantified argument calculi, modal logics, and the interplay between ‘is’ and ‘ought’ in proof-theoretic contexts. His contributions span journals like Journal of Philosophical Logic and Review of Symbolic Logic, reflecting a focus on formal rigor and interdisciplinary applications.
Gratzl’s academic trajectory includes prior work at the European Parliament, showcasing his engagement with both theoretical research and practical institutional roles. His research interests bridge historical and systematic analyses, maintaining a strong emphasis on proof-theoretic methods and their implications for philosophical debates.
