Jennifer R. Whitson is an Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo, affiliated with the Sociology and Legal Studies Department. She also teaches at the Stratford School. Her research focuses on the cultural and economic dimensions of software production, particularly in the game industry and surveillance studies. She explores how technologies like games shape governance, creativity, and human behavior through ethnographic studies in game studios. Whitson holds a PhD in Sociology from Carleton University and has been actively involved in interdisciplinary research and grants.
Her research interests span surveillance studies, gamification, digital culture, and the governance of emerging technologies. She has co-authored grants such as the SSHRC Insight Development Grant ($74,412) for studying independent game development networks and the SSHRC Partnership Grant ($2.5M) for innovation in games research.
