Jennifer Pybus is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Politics at York University's Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, and holds the Canada Research Chair in Data, Democracy and AI. Her research focuses on digital and algorithmic cultures, particularly the political economy of social media platforms and datafication processes that transform social interactions into exploitable data. She has held positions at King’s College London and conducted impactful interdisciplinary work through grants like the AHRC 'Our Data Ourselves' project and 'Zones of Data Translation' initiative.
Education includes a PhD in English and Cultural Studies from McMaster University (2013), an MA, and a BA from Simon Fraser University. Her work bridges academia and public engagement, collaborating with organizations like Tactical Tech to develop tools for critical data literacy. Key contributions include analyses of mobile ecosystems' data capture mechanisms, platform monopolization, and algorithmic accountability.
Research interests span data privacy (Dataveillance), platform politics, and the societal impacts of AI. She has presented at institutions globally and advised the European Parliament. Current initiatives aim to strengthen data literacy in Canada through participatory research and educational resources.
