Dr. Jennifer Puck is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. She directs the UCSF Jeffrey Modell Diagnostic Center for Primary Immunodeficiencies and serves as Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded Primary Immune Deficiency Treatment Consortium (PIDTC).
Education:
- Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, BA cum laude, 1971, Biochemistry
- Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, MD, 1975, Medicine
Dr. Puck's research focuses on human immune disorders and mouse models of lymphocyte development. She has pioneered the use of genetic and genomic technology along with cellular immunology to study impaired lymphocyte development and immune dysregulation. Her work has led to significant breakthroughs in understanding and treating primary immunodeficiencies, particularly severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID).
Her research publications demonstrate a strong focus on primary immunodeficiencies, particularly SCID and chronic granulomatous disease. Her work spans basic science, translational research, and clinical applications, with recent emphasis on newborn screening, gene therapy, and hematopoietic cell transplantation outcomes.
Scientific Awards and Honors:
- Abbot Award in Clinical and Diagnostic Immunology from the American Society of Microbiology (2013)
- Colonel Harlan Sanders Award for Lifetime Achievement in Genetics from the March of Dimes (2014)
- Boyle Achievement Award for service to primary immunodeficiencies from the Immune Deficiency Foundation (2017)
- Physician Scientist Award, NIH (1984-89)
- Ethyl Brown Foerderer Scholar, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (1986-89)
- NHGRI Director's Award for Studies Defining Autoimmune Lymphoproliferative Syndrome (1995, 97, 98, 99)
- NHGRI Director's Awards for Scientific Achievement and Outstanding Service (2001)
- Member, American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI)
- Member, Society for Pediatric Research (SPR)
- Member, Association of American Physicians (AAP)
- Member, American Pediatric Society (APS)
- Member, National Academy of Medicine
Dr. Puck has mentored numerous trainees and researchers in immunology and primary immunodeficiency disorders. Her current research is supported by multiple NIH grants including "Inherited T cell defects: Diagnosis, Mechanisms and Treatments" and the "Primary Immunodeficiency Treatment Consortium (PIDTC)." She also leads a CIRM-funded project on gene therapy for Artemis-deficient SCID.
Dr. Puck directs the UCSF Jeffrey Modell Diagnostic Center for Primary Immunodeficiencies and serves on the Medical Advisory Committee of the Immune Deficiency Foundation and the Committee on Primary Immunodeficiency Disease of the International Union of Immunological Societies.
