Dr. Jennifer Lynn Kruse is an HS Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Her research focuses on the intersection of psychiatry, neuroscience, and immunology, with particular emphasis on treatment-resistant depression and the role of inflammation in mental health.
Dr. Kruse's primary research interests include:
- Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) mechanisms and outcomes
- Neuroimmunology of depression
- Sex differences in depression treatment response
- Role of cytokines (particularly Interleukin-8) in mood disorders
- Psychiatric manifestations of autoimmune conditions
- Novel treatments for treatment-resistant depression
Analysis of Dr. Kruse's recent publications reveals a strong focus on the relationship between inflammation and depression treatment response. Her work frequently examines how inflammatory markers, particularly Interleukin-8, correlate with treatment outcomes in depression. A notable trend is her investigation of sex-specific differences in treatment response, with several publications highlighting how inflammatory mechanisms may differ between males and females with depression. Her research spans multiple treatment modalities including electroconvulsive therapy, ketamine, and inflammatory challenge paradigms, consistently connecting immune system activity with psychiatric symptomatology.
Dr. Kruse served as Principal Investigator on the NIH-funded project "Depression Response to Fast-Acting Treatments: Inflammation and Reward Mechanisms" (K23MH116127) from September 2018 to August 2022. This research grant investigated the biological mechanisms underlying rapid-acting antidepressant treatments, with a specific focus on inflammatory processes and neural reward circuitry.
Her collaborative network includes prominent researchers at UCLA such as Dr. Michael Irwin (a leading expert in psychoneuroimmunology), Dr. John Brooks, and Dr. Katherine Narr. These collaborations have resulted in numerous high-impact publications examining the neurobiological underpinnings of depression treatment response.
