Jennifer L. Geddes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia. She holds all three of her degrees from the University of Virginia: BA, MA, and PhD. Her research focuses on intersections between religion, literature, and culture, with specialties in Holocaust studies, ethics, and critical theory. She teaches courses like 'Responses to the Holocaust,' 'Literature and Ethics,' and 'Adorno, Benjamin, and Arendt.'
Her work examines themes of evil, suffering, and ethical interpretation through literary analysis, particularly in works by Kafka, Primo Levi, and Levinas. Recent publications explore political theology, post-Holocaust ethics, and theodicy debates. Geddes has authored monographs and edited volumes, including Kafka’s Ethics of Interpretation (2016) and co-edited The Double Binds of Ethics after the Holocaust (2009).
Her research bridges philosophy, religious studies, and literary criticism to address contemporary ethical dilemmas arising from historical atrocities. While no specific awards are listed, her prolific publication record reflects sustained scholarly impact. She advises students through the University of Virginia’s Religious Studies programs, contributing to both undergraduate and graduate education in Charlottesville.
Her academic contributions are anchored in interdisciplinary approaches, combining close textual analysis with broader philosophical questions about humanity and morality in the wake of modern tragedies.
