Dr. Jennifer L. Anderson is a Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology at San José State University, part of the College of Social Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University (1986) and specializes in Japanese culture, ethnohistory, and the anthropology of art. Her research focuses on Japanese tea ritual, traditional ceramics, and the intersection of religion with cultural practices.
Dr. Anderson has been awarded the rank of assistant professor at Urasenke (Kyoto), a 400-year-old tea lineage, and teaches weekly tea ceremonies. She authored An Introduction to Japanese Tea Ritual (1991) and published seminal work in Man: The Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute (1987).
In 2016, she received the College of Social Sciences Teaching Excellence Award for Lecturers. Her work bridges academic research with practical engagement, including creating accessible educational materials on tea ritual through multimedia formats.
