Dr. Jennifer Hixson serves as an Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Cumberland University, affiliated with the Millard and JJ Oakley School of Humanities, Education and the Arts. She holds a Psy.D. from the California School of Professional Psychology (2007), alongside an M.A. and B.S. from Alliant International University and Northwestern State University, respectively.
Her research focuses on complex trauma, toxic stress mitigation, and systemic interventions to address the 'schools-to-prisons pipeline.' She specializes in child/adolescent mental health, family systems therapy, and behavioral analysis. Her clinical work integrates evidence-based frameworks such as Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (under Dr. Dan Hughes), SMART (Dr. Elizabeth Warner), and the Neuro-Relational Framework (Dr. Constance Lillas). She collaborates with trauma experts like David Prescott on Problem Sexual Behaviors.
Dr. Hixson balances clinical practice with administrative leadership, transitioning between educational institutions and in-patient mental health facilities since 1998. She is a licensed clinical psychologist, school psychologist, and Board Certified Behavior Analyst.
Her current mission emphasizes rerouting youth affected by toxic stress and fractured family systems away from punitive systems through therapeutic and educational interventions.
