Jennifer Hankenson, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation at Yale School of Medicine, where she also serves as Associate Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs in Physiatry and Program Director for the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation residency at Yale New Haven Medical Center. She is board certified in both Physiatry and Lifestyle Medicine and specializes in neurorehabilitation for adult and pediatric patients.
Her clinical and academic work focuses on improving functional outcomes through multidisciplinary, patient-centered care. Areas of expertise include spasticity management using Botox and chemodenervation, cryoneurolysis, gait analysis, and non-operative treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. She is deeply committed to restoring functional movement and enhancing quality of life for individuals recovering from stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, and other neurologic conditions.
Dr. Hankenson is actively involved in professional organizations including the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Association of Academic Physiatrists, American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine, and the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Her research interests span muscle spasticity, obesity management, and Stiff-Person Syndrome, with a growing focus on lifestyle medicine interventions.
She has been recognized with several honors, including the Innovators and Influencers 2025 award from the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the J3P Leadership Training award, and prior accolades such as Resident of the Year and Surgical Intern of the Year during her training. As Program Director, she plays a key role in mentoring and training future physiatrists.
Dr. Hankenson sees patients at clinical locations in Milford, Wallingford, and New Haven, Connecticut, and is affiliated with the 3D Orthopaedics Lab and the Cerebral Palsy Program at Yale. Her dedication to collaborative care and functional restoration underscores her contributions to both clinical practice and academic medicine.
