Dr. Jennifer Georgen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ocean, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences at Old Dominion University (ODU). She holds a Ph.D. from MIT/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and a B.A. from the University of Virginia. Her research focuses on marine geophysics, numerical modeling of mantle dynamics, and coastal geology. She has led multiple federally funded projects totaling over $1.2 million, including initiatives on oceanic plateaus, submarine groundwater flow, and geoscience education tools like GEODE (Google Earth for Education).
Her expertise spans mantle plume interactions with mid-ocean ridges, triple junction dynamics, and geophysical fluid dynamics. She has advised students in coastal geology and geophysics, earning awards such as the Lee Entsminger Scholarship and ODU’s Outstanding M.S. Student. Notable honors include a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship and Phi Beta Kappa membership.
Her educational contributions include integrating Google Technology into geoscience curricula, enhancing student engagement through interactive tools. Current research includes studying Shatsky Rise formation and the effects of sea level rise on coastal groundwater systems. Dr. Georgen’s work bridges geophysics, numerical modeling, and applied education, advancing both scientific understanding and pedagogical innovation.
