Dr. Jennifer Aycock is an Assistant Professor of Religion in the Department of Philosophy & Religion at James Madison University (JMU), affiliated with the School of Communication Studies. She joined JMU in 2024 and holds an office in Cleveland Hall. Her research focuses on African Christianity during colonization, African Diaspora Christianity, and global approaches to Christianity, engaging African studies, Black Atlantic studies, mission history, theology, and postcolonial theory. She has published in journals such as the Journal of Religious History, International Bulletin of Mission Research, and Theological Librarianship, and contributed to the edited volume Protests, Petitions, and Persuasion: Documents from Malawi.
Dr. Aycock holds a Ph.D. and Th.M. from Emory University, an M.Div. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and a B.A. from Wheaton College. She is a Visiting Professor at Zomba Theological University (Malawi) and active in the Zomba Theological University Research Seminar. Her teaching emphasizes global Christianity, African religions, and Black Atlantic religious movements, fostering inclusive and student-centered learning environments. She previously served as Assistant Visiting Professor at Hood Theological Seminary and Affiliate Faculty at Columbia Theological Seminary.
Her work has been recognized through a Research Fellowship from the Schomburg Center and includes international presentations. She plans to reside at Zomba Theological University for the summer of 2025.
