Jennifer Alix-Garcia is a Professor of Applied Economics at Oregon State University (OSU), affiliated with the College of Agricultural Sciences. She also served as Department Head of Applied Economics from 2017 to 2022 and led the Sustainability Double Degree Program from 2020 to 2023. She holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics from UC Berkeley, an MALD in Environmental Policy from the Fletcher School, and a dual BS/BA in Resource Ecology and French from the University of Michigan.
Her research focuses on environment and development economics, including deforestation, refugee impacts, and program evaluation. Key areas include evaluating conservation policies, assessing the economic effects of forced migration, and analyzing the role of payments for ecosystem services. She has conducted fieldwork in regions such as Uganda, Mexico, and Kenya, examining land rights, refugee-host community dynamics, and environmental policy outcomes.
Dr. Alix-Garcia’s work spans multiple continents, with notable contributions to understanding forest conservation strategies in Brazil and Mexico, the socioeconomic impacts of refugee camps, and the historical legacies shaping land use. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates economic theory with empirical analysis, often using geospatial data and experimental methods.
Her awards include grants from NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the Australian Research Council. She has advised over 20 Ph.D. and Master’s students, mentoring research on topics like environmental governance, refugee economics, and deforestation drivers. Her teaching includes courses on microeconomic theory, development economics, and benefit-cost analysis.
