Dr Jenna Smith is a research-focused academic at the University of Sydney, situated within the Sydney School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health. Her programme of work applies mixed-methods and experimental designs to understand and improve how people—especially older adults and those with lower health literacy—make health decisions, particularly around cancer screening and over-diagnosis.
Research interests revolve around three inter-related themes:
- Health-literacy sensitive communication and shared decision-making
- Behavioural trials of interventions to reduce low-value care (e.g., Choosing Wisely consumer questions, plain-language summaries)
- Psychosocial impact of diagnostic labels and cessation messaging in cancer screening
Between 2020-2025 she has authored >35 peer-reviewed articles, including first-authored RCTs in BMJ Open, JAMA Network Open and Journal of General Internal Medicine, and co-authored IPDAS standards updates cited internationally. Her work is characterised by online factorial experiments, systematic reviews and qualitative GP studies that translate directly into practice and policy.
No specific grants, doctoral students or named awards are listed in the supplied material; however, her sustained output and central placement on multi-institutional trials indicate active external funding.
