Bratter earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001. Her work has been published in leading journals such as Social Science Research and Race and Social Problems, with recent projects exploring the intersection of race, family structures, and public health. She co-edited Unmaking Race (Oxford University Press, 2017) and a special issue of American Behavioral Scientist on racial data collection.
Her research consistently addresses contemporary social issues, including the role of multiracial organizations, the impact of slavery legacies on mixed-race families, and the evolving definitions of race in survey data. Bratter has received the 2009 Career Enhancement Fellowship from the Woodrow Wilson National Foundation. Her grants and collaborations explore interventions in educational settings and spatial inequality in urban environments.
