JenClare Gawaran serves as an Adjunct Lecturer at the College for Creative Studies, where she teaches drawing, design and printmaking within the Studio Art & Craft department. She also maintains teaching positions at Wayne State University, Oakland University and Macomb Community College, demonstrating her commitment to art education across multiple Detroit-area institutions.
Her educational background includes a BFA in art education from Michigan State University and an MFA in printmaking from Wayne State University. These academic foundations have shaped her distinctive approach to artistic practice and pedagogy.
Gawaran's artistic practice centers on cultural identity exploration, particularly examining her Filipino-American heritage through the lens of suburban Midwest upbringing. Her work employs printmaking techniques including serigraph, chine colle, collage and drawing to layer visual cues of cultural identity and gender expectations. She combines Filipino textile patterns with stereotypical symbols of Filipino, Asian and American culture to create autobiographical scenes reflecting on childhood memories and cultural belonging. The fluid nature of printmaking aligns with her conceptual interests in replicated imagery and identity construction.
Her exhibition history reveals consistent engagement with themes of identity, cultural hybridity, and personal narrative across diverse venues. The 15 most recent exhibitions demonstrate her active presence in both local Detroit galleries like Detroit Artist Market and The Scarab Club, as well as national and international venues spanning from Los Angeles to Jerusalem and Finland. Her work has been included in prestigious permanent collections including the Detroit Institute of Arts, Wayne State University, and the Guangdong Museum of Art in China.
