Jen Gunderman is an Assistant Professor of Musicology at the Blair School of Music, Vanderbilt University, where she has been since 2004. She divides her time between academic teaching, performing, and recording. Her teaching focuses on American popular music history, and she launched the Coursera MOOC “Understanding the Music Business: What Is Music Worth?” in 2016, Vanderbilt’s first Always Available Coursera course. She also hosts and directs the interview series Conversations at Blair, featuring artists like Peter Frampton and Sheryl Crow.
Education: B.A. in classical piano performance (Vassar College, Phi Beta Kappa honors), M.A. in ethnomusicology (University of Washington). Additional studies at Heidelberg-Mannheim Hochschule für Musik and the University of Mannheim, Germany.
As a performer, she has toured internationally with Sheryl Crow since 2013, appearing at venues like Wembley Stadium (UK), Royal Albert Hall (London), and the Ryman Auditorium (Nashville). She has collaborated with artists including Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, and many others, and has performed on major TV shows such as The Tonight Show, Ellen, and Good Morning America.
