Dr. Jen Dickinson is an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton, specializing in political and development geography. Her research focuses on diaspora mobilization, governance policies, and the impacts of diaspora engagement on cultural heritage and tourism in low-income countries. She explores how diasporic communities, particularly Indian and Rwandan youth, engage with transnational policies and reconciliation initiatives.
Dr. Dickinson holds a PhD from the University of Leeds (2008) and has held academic positions at the Universities of St. Andrews, Leicester, and Winchester before joining Southampton in 2022. Her work integrates feminist and postcolonial approaches to analyze diaspora diplomacy, digital politics, and transnational civil society.
Her teaching emphasizes postcolonial geography, migration, and development, with a focus on decolonial methodologies and geopolitical frameworks.
Current research includes the 'Reframing Sacred Urbanism' project examining India-UK diasporic connections and heritage revival. She supervises PhD students like Mandy Preville-Findlay and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams such as the Centre for Transnational Studies and the Economy, Society and Governance Centre.
