Jelle van der Leest

Jelle van der Leest is a Lecturer at the Academy of Theatre and Dance (ATD), part of the Amsterdam University of the Arts, where he teaches in the Dance in Education study programme. His work focuses on inclusive dance practices, particularly for individuals with chronic illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis (MS). He collaborates closely with Damar Lamers, founder of Stichting ReDiscoverMe, to explore how dance can empower participants through creative expression and social inclusion.

Education Background:

• Graduated from Scapino Dance Academy in 1987.

Research & Practice: His research examines transformative experiences in dance, emphasizing how inclusive practices foster personal growth and community engagement. Key projects include:

• Co-author of the 2023 study Escape, expand, embrace, exploring the impact of dance on well-being for those with chronic illnesses.
• Co-developer of the 2022 publication Mag ik deze dans met jou?, analyzing inclusive dance didactics.
• Contributor to the performance Ik en de Ander, showcasing inclusive choreography.

Teaching & Outreach: Jelle has extensive experience teaching professionals and amateurs, including classical ballet and teacher training programs. He previously managed dance centers in Leiden and Zaandam.
