Prof. Jelle Jansen is a full Professor of Ius Commune at the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen. He holds a chair in General Law Studies and History of Law. His academic career includes roles as associate professor at Utrecht and Nijmegen Universities, and a special appointment as professor of Private Law at the University of Amsterdam (2013-2016). He teaches Anglo-American Law at Radboud University Nijmegen and contributes to legal education for professionals via Post Academic Education.
Education: LL.B. (2004), PhD in Roman Law (2011), both from Groningen University. Research focuses on Roman Law's influence on modern European private law, comparative law studies, and colonial legal history, particularly slavery-related legislation. He explores foundational concepts like property, contracts, and codification processes in legal systems.
His publications (128+ works) analyze historical legal doctrines and modern applications. Recent themes include movable property rights, revindication doctrines, and colonial-era laws. He serves on editorial boards for Rechtsgeleerd Magazijn Themis and Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Burgerlijk Recht.
Teaching includes seminars on European Private Law, Legal History, and research methodology. He advises on legal aspects of heritage law, waste management disputes, and historical property rights. Active in academic governance as member of the Faculty Committee on Scientific Practice.
