Jeffry S. Nyman is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering at Vanderbilt University, holding dual appointments in the School of Engineering and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He leads the Nyman Lab within the Center for Bone Biology, focusing on improving clinical assessment of fracture risk and understanding mechanisms underlying bone fragility in diseases like osteoporosis, diabetes, and genetic disorders.
Education: PhD in Biomedical Engineering from University of California, and MS and BS in Mechanical/Solid Mechanics from University of Memphis.
Research interests include bone toughness regulation, glycation-mediated matrix modifications, and development of non-invasive imaging techniques (MRI, Raman spectroscopy) for fracture risk assessment. Current projects explore bound water dynamics in bone, osteoporosis diagnostics, and Raman spectroscopy clinical applications.
Publications emphasize translational research linking molecular mechanisms to clinical outcomes, with recent work on SGLT2 inhibitors, immunoregulation of bone remodeling, and diabetic bone pathology. His work bridges engineering and clinical medicine to address unmet needs in musculoskeletal health.
