Jeffrey Witmer is a Professor of Statistics at Oberlin College, affiliated with the Department of Mathematics within the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a BS from the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse (1979) and a PhD from the University of Minnesota School of Statistics (1983). His research focuses on Bayesian decision theory and statistical modeling, with a strong emphasis on pedagogical approaches to statistics education. Witmer has received prestigious awards, including the 2024 Chauvenet Prize for his work on Simpson’s paradox and the 2025 Founders Award from the American Statistical Association.
He teaches courses such as Introduction to Statistics (DATA 113) and Statistics and Modeling (DATA 205). His professional contributions include developing educational materials for statistical software (e.g., R, ggplot2) and presenting on topics like Bayesian methods for undergraduates. Witmer has also engaged with interdisciplinary challenges, as noted in his response to pandemic-related academic adjustments during the COVID-19 era.
- Awards: Founders Award (2025), Chauvenet Prize (2024)
Witmer’s work bridges theoretical statistics and practical applications, with a commitment to advancing statistical literacy through teaching and research.
