With 36 years of teaching experience, he specializes in Combinatorics, Number Theory, and Optimization. He has designed courses such as Math 0480 (Applied Discrete Math), Math 1101 (Introduction to Optimization), and Math 1103 (BIG Problems). His research extends Erdős and Heilbronn’s conjectures to finite groups, and he has authored multiple publications in combinatorial number theory.
Awarded the Tina and David Bellet Teaching Excellence Award (2019) and the Meritorious Mentoring Award (2024), Wheeler has supervised numerous Master’s theses, PhD committees, and directed studies. Notable projects include work on the Traveling Salesman Problem, Voting Irregularities, and Big Data applications in industry. He has also contributed to the MAA’s PIC Math program, guiding students in solving real-world problems for businesses and governments.
Wheeler’s professional activities include serving as a reviewer for the American Mathematical Society and as the Calculus 2 liaison for Pitt’s College in High School program.
