معرفی
Dr. Jeffrey Tao Cheng is an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at Harvard Medical School and an Investigator at the Eaton-Peabody Laboratories, Massachusetts Eye and Ear. His work is centered on the biomechanics of the ear, with a focus on the tympanic membrane and middle ear function in both normal and pathological states.
Research Interests:
- Structure-function relationships in normal and pathological ears
- Damage and repair mechanisms in the ear for hearing restoration
- Laser-based imaging techniques including holography, optical coherence tomography, and laser Doppler vibrometry
- Development of non-invasive diagnostic and therapeutic devices for ear diseases
- 3D-printed tissue-engineered materials for ear repair
Dr. Cheng’s laboratory employs cutting-edge optical technologies to measure nanometer-scale vibrations of the tympanic membrane and ossicles, offering new insights into sound conduction and middle-ear pathology. His collaborative efforts span across disciplines, including optics, materials science, and clinical otolaryngology.
Scientific Impact: His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on high-speed imaging and mechanical analysis of the tympanic membrane under both normal and traumatic conditions, such as blast exposure. His work bridges experimental biomechanics with clinical applications, aiming to improve diagnostics and treatment outcomes in otologic surgery.
