Dr. Jeffrey S. Brown is an Associate Professor in the Department of Historical Studies at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), located in Fredericton. He holds a PhD in History from the University of Rochester (2002), alongside MA degrees from SUNY Brockport (History) and York University (Social and Political Thought). His research focuses on transatlantic modernism/modernity, American vitalist theories, and therapeutic cultural studies. He has published extensively on topics including revolutionary syndicalism, vagabond culture, and historical temporality.
Dr. Brown teaches foundational US history surveys and specialized courses on American radicalism, African American history, and historical methodologies. He advises graduate students in 20th-century US intellectual and cultural history. In 2009, he received the Arts Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, reflecting his commitment to pedagogy.
His current book project, Vital Moment: The Philosophy of Life and the Politics of Meaning in Modern America, 1900-1925, builds on his doctoral work examining vitalist influences on American thought. His publications appear in journals like Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era and edited volumes such as The Chicago School Diaspora.
