Carroll’s research centers on American political institutions, racial politics, urban governance, political geography, and civic engagement. His work explores how data and information shape democratic participation, particularly in urban contexts like Philadelphia. He investigates voting behavior, inequality, public policy, and the role of culture—especially hip-hop—in political dialogue. His scholarship emphasizes applied, community-oriented research that connects academia with real-world civic challenges.
The recent publications reflect a strong thematic focus on the intersection of race, data, and urban politics. His work analyzes voter turnout in impoverished areas, third-party electoral breakthroughs, and the impact of digital spaces on political discourse. These studies employ interdisciplinary methods, combining political science theory with urban studies and data analytics, and are often co-authored with colleagues in economics and history.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Maguire Foundation Grant ($4,000) for founding Beatlab, Philadelphia’s first hip-hop-centered music studio promoting social justice
- Advisor of the Year (2017–2018) at Chestnut Hill College
