Jeffrey McMahon is a Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Chicago, specializing in observational cosmology and astrophysics. His laboratory is located in the ERC building on campus.
His research focuses on precision measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) using ground-based telescopes. As a leading member of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and South Pole Telescope (SPT) collaborations, he develops instrumentation and analysis techniques to study the origin and evolution of the universe.
Recent publications demonstrate leadership in large-scale CMB surveys and multi-instrument data integration. Current work combines data from ACT, SPT, and Planck satellite to produce unified structure growth measurements and advance dark energy models.
He contributes to next-generation projects including the Simons Observatory and CCAT-prime, developing advanced detector technologies for millimeter-wave astronomy. His group focuses on improving sensitivity and resolution of CMB measurements to test fundamental cosmological theories.
Research Areas:
- Cosmic microwave background physics
- Large-scale structure formation
- Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect in galaxy clusters
- Dark energy and dark matter properties
- Millimeter-wave instrumentation
