He holds a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology from City University of New York, where his research focused on Dengue and Influenza virus manipulation of mammalian cell death. His current teaching responsibilities include General Biology I/II, Microbiology, and Human Anatomy & Physiology.
Dr. McLean's research interests center on viral pathogenesis, phage genomics, and bioinformatics, with particular expertise in Mycobacterium smegmatis phage systems. He integrates computational and experimental approaches to study host-virus interactions.
As primary instructor for the SEA-PHAGES program since 2016, he has led multiple courses in phage discovery (in situ) and genomics (in silico), typically teaching 6-12 students per semester.
