Christy Fillman serves as a Teaching Professor in the Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology department at the University of Colorado Boulder. She has been actively involved with the HHMI Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program since at least 2014, teaching numerous sections of MCDB 1161 (Phage Discovery) and MCDB 2161 (Phage Genomics Lab) courses.
Her research and teaching interests focus on phage discovery, molecular microbiology, and bioinformatics, with extensive experience using Mycobacterium smegmatis as a host organism. Dr. Fillman has taught students across all undergraduate levels, from freshmen to seniors, in both in situ (phage discovery/microbiology) and in silico (phage genomics/bioinformatics) laboratory settings.
She has consistently co-taught with Nancy Guild across multiple semesters, demonstrating strong collaborative teaching practices within the SEA-PHAGES program. Her teaching load typically involves 3 meetings per week for 5 hours in discovery courses and 2 meetings per week for 4 hours in genomics courses, with class sizes ranging from 9 to 27 students.
Dr. Fillman has maintained active teaching responsibilities through Spring 2024 and has a course scheduled for Spring 2025, indicating her ongoing engagement with the program and students.
