Jeffrey Henderson

Jeffrey Henderson is the William Goodwin Aurelio Professor of Greek Language and Literature at Boston University, serving as former Dean of the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. He holds leadership roles as General Editor of the Loeb Classical Library and Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Education:

• Ph.D. in Classics, Harvard University (1972)

Research Interests: Focuses on Greek comedy’s social/political contexts, Greek obscenity, ancient novels, textual criticism, and classical translation. His work emphasizes Aristophanes and Athenian cultural dynamics.

Publications: Notable works include editions of Aristophanes’ plays (Loeb series) and co-edited volumes on Greek drama history. His The Maculate Muse explores obscenity in Attic comedy.

Awards & Grants: Recipient of NEH and Guggenheim fellowships, Raubenheimer Award, and served as President of the American Philological Association.

Leadership: Founded Boston University’s Honors Program and previously chaired classics departments at Yale, Michigan, and USC.
