Dr. Jeffrey H. Silber holds the Nancy Abramson Wolfson Endowed Chair in Health Services Research at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and is a Professor of Pediatrics and Anesthesiology & Critical Care at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and Professor of Health Care Management at the Wharton School. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics. Since 1997, Dr. Silber has served as Director of the Center for Outcomes Research at CHOP.
Dr. Silber is an internationally recognized authority on outcomes measurement and severity adjustment, having developed the Failure-to-Rescue (FTR) measure in 1990, which has been adopted by the National Quality Forum. His research encompasses clinical economics, development of new healthcare outcome measures, health care disparities, measuring healthcare quality, medical decision making, and outcomes of care in cancer. Much of his recent work focuses on multivariate matching methods for comparing outcomes in both pediatric and adult medicine and surgery.
His extensive publication record includes numerous high-impact articles in journals like the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Surgery, and Journal of General Internal Medicine. His research consistently addresses critical healthcare issues including surgical outcomes, resident duty hour reforms, healthcare disparities, and resource utilization across different patient populations.
Dr. Silber has received multiple prestigious awards including two AcademyHealth Article-of-the-Year awards (2011, 2003), the AcademyHealth Abstract-of-the-Year (2007), and the Hummeler Research Prize (2003). He also holds the Nancy Abramson Wolfson Endowed Chair of Health Services Research since 2013.
At the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Silber teaches Health Care Quality and Outcomes: Measurement and Management at the Wharton School and Outcomes Research at the Perelman School of Medicine. His Center for Outcomes Research serves as a multidisciplinary hub for health services research aimed at improving health outcomes through innovative metrics that transform healthcare quality and efficiency.
