Jeffrey Frame is an Associate Professor in the Department of Climate, Meteorology & Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He has taught since 2010, specializing in severe storms and winter weather. His research focuses on extratropical cyclones, thunderstorm dynamics, and lake-effect snow systems. He has participated in major field campaigns like VORTEX2 and OWLeS, contributing to understanding tornado formation and lake-effect precipitation. Frame has received multiple teaching awards, including a 2022 University-wide honor and a 2018 College award. He advises students and teaches courses in meteorology, forecasting, and convection field studies. His work emphasizes observational and numerical modeling studies of weather phenomena.
- Education: Ph.D. (2008), M.S. (2003), Penn State; B.S. (2001), University of Michigan
- Research Interests: Supercell thunderstorms, tornado dynamics, lake-effect snow, mesoscale meteorology
- Affiliations: School of Earth, Society & Environment; Department of Climate, Meteorology & Atmospheric Sciences
Frame’s research combines field observations with numerical simulations to explore storm evolution and environmental interactions. Recent studies include investigations into streamwise vorticity currents in supercells and misovortex dynamics in lake-effect snowbands. He has led student field excursions to the Great Plains for severe storm observation. Awards include the Hans Neuberger Award (2008) and the AMS National Weather Service Graduate Fellowship (2001–2002).
His publications span topics like supercell longevity, cold pool impacts on tornadoes, and radar-based analysis of vortices in lake-effect systems. Frame actively engages in educational outreach and maintains a lab focused on advancing weather forecasting techniques and severe storm prediction.
