Dr. Jeffrey D. Sharon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. He serves as the Director of the UCSF Balance and Falls Center and specializes in otology, neurotology, and skull base surgery. His clinical expertise encompasses cochlear implants, vestibular disorders, and complex ear conditions including vestibular schwannoma, otosclerosis, and superior canal dehiscence syndrome.
Dr. Sharon received his medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 2009. He completed his residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University in 2014, followed by a fellowship in Otology, Neurotology, and Skull Base Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2016.
His research focuses on vestibular disorders, particularly vestibular migraine, where he developed the VM-PATHI (Vestibular Migraine Patient Assessment Tool and Handicap Inventory) and conducted the first placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial of CGRP medications for vestibular migraine. His work also addresses superior canal dehiscence syndrome, Meniere's disease, and outcomes in vestibular disease. Dr. Sharon has published extensively on temporal bone surgery, cochlear implants, and diagnostic approaches to dizziness.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on patient-centered outcomes, innovative treatment approaches for vestibular disorders, and methodological improvements in vestibular assessment. The research spans clinical trials, diagnostic tools, surgical techniques, and pharmacological interventions, with an increasing emphasis on patient-reported outcomes and quality of life measures.
