Jeffrey C. Barnett is the S. Blount Mason Professor of Romance Languages at Washington and Lee University. He joined the faculty in 1989 after earning his doctorate from the University of Kentucky, where he specialized in Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Barnett teaches courses on language, culture, and literature, including Spanish-American novels from the 'Boom Generation,' Caribbean literature, and literary translation.
His inaugural lecture for the endowed professorship, titled 'Lost (And Found Again) in Translation,' highlights his personal experiences as a literary translator of Spanish-American authors such as Carlos Fuentes, Uva de Aragón, and Zurelys López Amaya. Barnett emphasizes the artistic balance between literal and embellished translations to maintain fidelity to original works.
