Jeffrey Ahlman is a Professor of History and Gwendolen Carter Professor of African Studies at Smith College. He chairs both the History Department and the African Studies Program. His research specializes in African political, social, and cultural history, with a focus on Ghana, Pan-Africanism, and decolonization. Ahlman holds a BA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and MA/PhD from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
He has received grants and fellowships from organizations including the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Historical Association. Current research includes a project on W.E.B. Du Bois’s engagement with Africa. Ahlman teaches courses on early African history, colonial West Africa, gender and sexuality in Africa, and African transnational networks. His office is located in 10 Prospect #304 at Smith College.
Publications include Ghana: A Political and Social History (2024), Kwame Nkrumah: Visions of Liberation (2021), and Living with Nkrumahism (2017). His work appears in journals like the Journal of African History and Africa Today.
