His work examines STEM identity formation among underrepresented non-STEM majors through lenses of cultural sovereignty and sustainability, positioning research as ceremonial practice that bridges ancestral wisdom with contemporary computing education.
His 2019-2023 publications reveal a decisive shift from traditional mathematics education toward interdisciplinary scholarship centered on indigenous epistemologies. Key themes include decolonizing academic spaces, ancestral computing for environmental sustainability, and ceremonial research methodologies that transform computing education through indigenous mothering frameworks and basket-weaving knowledge systems.
No scientific awards were documented in available materials.
As principal investigator, Fleming secured National Science Foundation grants for Ancestral Computing for Sustainability (2019) and Refocused Intermediate Algebra (2005), plus OSSE funding for the Poetry in Rigor Program (2010). His leadership extends to chairing UDC's CAS Assessment and Budget Teams while mentoring emerging scholars through collaborative research projects focused on equity in STEM education.
He directs institutional initiatives including the CAS Fluid and Dynamic Series and leads multi-institutional research teams exploring indigenous knowledge integration in computing education, with recent collaborations spanning Native American Indian Studies Association networks and urban education consortia.
