Prof. Jeff de Hosson is a Full Professor of Applied Physics at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Department of Applied Physics. His academic career spans over four decades, including roles as Head of the Department of Applied Physics and Dean of Physics. He holds Honorary Guest Professorships at Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology Beijing, and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
Education: BSc (cum laude) and MSc (cum laude) in Physics from Utrecht University, followed by a PhD (cum laude) from the University of Groningen in 1976. Postdoctoral work at Northwestern University and UC Berkeley. Extensive editorial roles include Editor-in-Chief of Acta Materialia and over 20 other journals. Research focuses on nanostructured materials, electron microscopy, laser additive manufacturing, and protective coatings.

- Nanostructured materials and their mechanical/chemical properties
- Transmission and scanning electron microscopy techniques
- Laser processing for surface engineering
- Interfaces in materials and their dynamic behavior
Awards: Over 20 major honors, including the Knight Order of the Netherlands Lion (2019), European Materials Gold Medal (2005), and Fellowships from multiple international societies. Authored ~1,100 publications and supervised 87 PhD students.
Labs/Teams: Lead researcher in the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials and the NANOSMAT School. Collaborations include Philips, Fraunhofer Institute, and international universities. Active in advanced microscopy, materials design, and industrial applications.
