Jeff Welker is a Professor and UArctic Chair in Ecology and Biogeochemistry at the University of Oulu. His research spans Arctic plant and ecosystem ecology, biogeochemistry, and biosphere-atmosphere interactions, with a focus on climate change impacts and international collaborations.
- Convenes UArctic Congress sessions on Arctic cultural practices
- Leads the Pan Arctic Water Isotope Network (PAWIN) with INTERACT remote access funding
His research integrates four themes:
- Tundra plant and ecosystem structure/function via the ITEX program
- Arctic Water Isotope Cycle and sea ice's influence on precipitation
- Terrestrial/marine food web processes (e.g., Arctic herbivore diets)
- Herbivore and climate effects on greenhouse gas emissions
He serves on the US Arctic Icebreaker Coordination Committee, NSF Office of Polar Programs Advisory Committee, and contributes to Arctic policy and research coordination.
Scientific Awards:
- UArctic Chair in Ecology and Biogeochemistry
Grants & Projects:
- Academy of Finland Consortium Project (2022)
- INTERACT remote access grant for PAWIN (2018)
- Leading Arctic icebreaker expeditions (Healy, I/B Oden) and MOSAiC-related studies
