Jeff Forret is a Professor of History at Lamar University, specializing in slavery, the South, and nineteenth-century American history. He has held distinguished roles such as the Dr. Ralph and Edna Wooster Professor of History (2022-2024) and LU Distinguished Faculty Research Fellow (2016-2021). His accolades include the University Scholar Award (2016) and the Distinguished Faculty Lecturer honor (2020).

Dr. Forret’s research focuses on slavery, racial violence, legal history, and the intersection of Indigenous history with the Dred Scott case. His work explores the commodification of enslaved people, community dynamics, and comparative slavery studies.
His recent publications include the monograph The Price They Paid: Slavery, Shipwrecks, and Reparations Before the Civil War (2024) and Williams' Gang: A Notorious Slave Trader and His Cargo of Black Convicts (2020), which won the AASLH Leadership in History Award. He also co-edited anthologies such as Southern Scoundrels (2021) and New Directions in Slavery Studies (2015).
