Jeff Brison is a Full Professor in the Department of History at Queen's University, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Science. He specializes in cultural history, focusing on the intersection of culture, philanthropy, and politics in North America, particularly Canada. His research explores American philanthropy's role in shaping Canadian national culture, as well as global dimensions of cultural diplomacy. He co-founded the North American Cultural Diplomacy Initiative (NACDI) and leads Queen’s University’s Cultural Studies Program as its Director.
Brison holds a Ph.D., M.A., and H.B.A. in History from Queen’s University and McGill University. His major works include Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Canada (2005), nominated for the John Grenzebach Award, and co-authored studies on cultural diplomacy and Canadian foreign policy. He has supervised over 40 graduate students, earning awards for teaching excellence such as the 2022 Excellence in Graduate Supervision Award.
His research affiliations include the Wilson Institute for Canadian History and NACDI. Current projects include Winners’ History: The Group of Seven and North Atlantic Men, exploring cultural networks between Canada, the U.S., and Britain. He has secured grants from SSHRC, Global Affairs Canada, and others, supporting interdisciplinary cultural studies and museum diplomacy research.
Brison’s work bridges academia and public policy, producing open-access reports like Cultural Diplomacy as Critical Practice and advising on global cultural strategies. His teaching spans Canadian-American relations, cultural identity, and museum representation, with a focus on graduate mentorship across disciplines.
