Jeff Avery is an Associate Professor, Teaching Stream at the University of Waterloo. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo and multiple degrees from McMaster University, including a B.A.Sc. (Bachelor of Applied Science), M.A., and B.A. His research focuses on optimizing input and interaction techniques for multi-touch systems and mobile devices. Teaching interests include software engineering methodology, reducing software complexity, and the design of interactive systems.
Research Interests:
- Multi-Touch Systems: Developing advanced gestures and interaction techniques for complex tasks.
- Mobile Interaction: Enhancing user experience through innovations like distal vibrotactile feedback and handedness detection.
- User-Centered Design: Bridging novice and expert user proficiency via guided shortcuts and adaptive interfaces.
Publications span 2014–2020, emphasizing touch-based interfaces, gesture optimization, and HCI innovations. Notable work includes transient gestures for touch surfaces and anthropomorphized conversational agents. His research bridges theoretical HCI principles with practical design challenges in mobile and personal computing.
Advising and Grants: No specific advising or grant details are provided in the text. His work is primarily research and teaching-focused within the University of Waterloo.
