Prof. Jef Vandenberghe is a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Science, Earth and Climate Department of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He holds visiting professorships at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Xian), University of Novi Sad, and University of Nanjing. His research focuses on Quaternary geology, geomorphology, and paleoclimatology, particularly in loess deposits, permafrost, and Tibetan Plateau dynamics. He has supervised 25 PhD theses and edited journals like Quaternary and Boreas.
Education:
- PhD in Geomorphology (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, 1973)
- Master of Science in Geology (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, 1979)
- Master of Geography (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, 1968)
Research Interests: His work addresses loess stratigraphy, climate change impacts on river terraces, and permafrost evolution during the Last Glacial Maximum. Key themes include fluvial dynamics, aeolian processes, and monsoon variability. Recent studies analyze Tibetan Plateau tectonics and Holocene environmental changes.
Publications & Awards:
- 303+ research outputs, including 2024 articles on loess facies and fluvial morphology.
- Awards: Christoffel Plantin Prize (2004), André Dumont Medal (1994), and Koninklijke Academie laureate (1973).
- Editor-in-Chief of Quaternary (MDPI) and former associate editor of Permafrost and Periglacial Processes.
Grants & Collaborations: Active in international projects, including studies on the Huangshui River (Tibetan Plateau) and Serbian loess sequences. Collaborates with institutions in China, Serbia, and Turkey.
