University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerlandمعرفی
Cristian Scapozza is a Professor of Applied Geomorphology and Head of the Climate Change and Territory Competence Center (CCCT) at the Department of Environment, Construction and Design (DACD) of SUPSI (Scuola universitaria professionale della Svizzera italiana). Born in Faido on May 23, 1983, and originally from Olivone in the Blenio Valley, he has established himself as a leading researcher in Alpine geomorphology and climate change impacts.
His research focuses on Alpine glacial and periglacial geomorphology, Quaternary geology, and climate change impacts on mountain environments. Dr. Scapozza has conducted extensive fieldwork on permafrost dynamics in the Ticino Alps, fluvial environments of the Ticino River, and Lake Maggiore's evolution. His work combines traditional geomorphological methods with geophysical techniques to understand landscape evolution and human-environment interactions in Alpine regions.
Dr. Scapozza's recent publications reveal a strong focus on understanding the impacts of climate change on Alpine environments, particularly regarding permafrost degradation and its hydrological consequences. His research demonstrates how warming temperatures are affecting rock glacier dynamics and water quality in Alpine watersheds, while his work on Lake Maggiore examines the complex relationship between lake-level management and ecosystem health.
His notable awards include:
- AF Schläfli Prize from the Swiss Academy of Sciences (2008)
- Faculty of Geosciences and Environment Prize for Master's thesis (2008)
- Faculty of Geosciences and Environment Prize for Doctoral thesis (2012)
As head of the Climate Change and Territory Competence Center, Dr. Scapozza oversees multiple research grants focused on permafrost monitoring, river revitalization projects, and geoarchaeological studies of historical Alpine settlements. His work bridges scientific research with practical applications for environmental management and geotourism development in the Ticino region.
Dr. Scapozza also leads the Climate Change and Territory Competence Center, which coordinates Switzerland's participation in permafrost monitoring networks and develops educational initiatives about climate change impacts in Alpine environments. His geotourism work, particularly the AMALPI TREK project, provides innovative approaches to public engagement with geological processes and environmental risks.
