Jeeseong C. Hwang is a Researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the Applied Physics Division of the Physical Measurement Laboratory, leading the Molecular and Bio-Photonics Group. He has been with NIST since 1993, transitioning from Gaithersburg, MD (1997-2013) to Boulder, CO (2013-present), following prior research at Johns Hopkins University.
His academic background includes:
- Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics, Michigan State University
- B.S. in Physics, Seoul National University
Dr. Hwang's research centers on nanobiophotonics and optical imaging, with core expertise in multimodal molecular imaging techniques, development of optical phantoms for medical device calibration, bio-inspired nanoscale assembly for optical sensors, and quantitative image analysis software. His work bridges atomic/molecular physics, quantum optics, and biomedical engineering to solve challenges in pathogen detection and tissue imaging.
His scientific impact is recognized through:
- SPIE Fellowship (2025)
- NIST/Department of Commerce Silver Medal (2008)
- Washington Academy of Sciences Biological Sciences Award (2012)
With over 100 technical publications and 65+ invited talks, he actively shapes the field through service on the SPIE BiOS Conference committee since 2006. His Molecular and Bio-Photonics Group drives innovation in optical imaging standards and nanoscale biosensors for clinical applications.
