Jeannette Colyvas is a Professor in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University, holding joint appointments in Learning Sciences, Human Development and Social Policy, and the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems (NICO). She also serves as a courtesy professor in Sociology and Kellogg School of Management's MORS program. Her research focuses on organizational dynamics, institutional theory, and science policy, with emphasis on innovation ecosystems and equity in higher education grantmaking. Colyvas directs undergraduate programs in SESP and has received numerous teaching honors including multiple Teacher of the Year awards and recognition from student governments.
- Education: PhD in Sociology from Stanford University (2007), with prior MA degrees in Sociology and East Asian Studies
Research interests span organizational emergence, institutionalization processes, and governance structures in public/private sectors. Notable work examines racialized grantmaking practices and the paradoxes of commercialization in academic science. She leads funded projects on career trajectories in knowledge production and restorative justice in schools, with grants from NSF, Spencer Foundation, and others. Colyvas co-edits special issues on actorhood in institutional theory and contributed to National Academies reports on federal innovation programs.
